  •  TLO, I apologize for using such harsh terms (11+ / 0-)

in my judgment of your letter. I don't know thing one about you, other than that you apparently have an IQ of about 175, which is actually enough to impress me.

This being an adult conversation, and you being evidently capable of adult conversation, I won't patronize you, but I will restate, in a more polite and respectful fashion, my feeling that it isn't really appropriate for us citizens to address our concerns to the children of our elected officials -- not even if "we" are children ourselves; not even if "we" are ordinary children, which you certainly are not; and not even if we like and admire those officials' children.

Most other commenters here disagree with me, and are filling your response thread, not only with notes of general high regard, but with specific praise for your child-to-child mission. That's their view, to which they are entitled, and having won their praise, you are entitled to the satisfaction that comes with being praised by one's community.

As for me, the unpleasant tenor of my comments derived less from any specific thing you wrote, than from my own discomfort with the growing culture of celebrity in American politics. Sasha and Malia might be remarkable young women (and then again, they might not, I don't want to know enough about them to even make the judgement), but the only reason any of us has ever heard of them is because of the accomplishments of their parents. Inherited celebrity makes me itch.

I hope you will accept my apology for my unwarranted rudeness.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
