  •  My mother was 26 (4+ / 0-)

left with 3 and 6 year old girls, and a pile of medical bills from a 2 year battle with Leukemia before it took my dad, that ate up the bulk of the life insurance. Thanks our SSI benefits, and what was left of the insurance, she managed to stay home for a few years, and not go back to work until I was old enough to watch my sister.

And we should've been able to keep getting survivor benefits through college, which would've given us both the opportunity to attend right after high school, instead of getting jobs.

But thanks to their savior Reagan, I was cut off at 18 (she at 19 because she was still in high school) - because apparently it's only survivors of wealthy families whose benefits should help pay for their education.
