  •  The problem with "Christians" of Bachmann's ilk (14+ / 0-)

is their attempt to hold anyone to the contents of what she would refer to as the "Old Testament."  Jews have centuries of deep, brilliant scholarship in the Talmud, interpreting their Bible by making sense, compassion and great philosophy out of it, but these ignorant "Christian" fundies have decided they know better and that the OT should be read literally.

    •  Well you might want to look up the Karaites then (4+ / 0-)

as they are a sect of Jews who reject the Talmud and are OT literal and OT only.  There are very few of them for obvious reasons.

    •  Also the fact that the Christian tradition (9+ / 0-)

of translation understandably hasn't included anyone who didn't have an agenda of making the translation fit whatever Christian interpretation of a given passage was common at the time. Good luck selling a Christian translation that doesn't see Jesus in every third or fourth verse of Isaiah, even if it takes REALLY stretching for it.

So she's trying to hold Jews to a literal reading of a translated text, where that precise reading often WAS the entire agenda of the translators (guaranteed to be so for the HCSB, that was the entire point of that translation). She acts like it's the same text, when even without bringing the Talmud and other traditions into it the text is different. Even a fundamentally literal reading from a Jewish translation or the original language text would be different from her literal reading of a Christian translation.

    •  She says she's a Christian with a Jewish heritage (4+ / 0-)

uh, that heritage being that Jews wrote the front part of the Bible (what Bachmann would call the "back story" or "prequel" aka "old" Testament) to what Jesus the Son of God penned himself in the New (and improved) Testament, and so she can speak on behalf of, and lecture Jews because of her "Jewish heritage", ie the Jewish "heritage" of her very Christian faith.
