the source Ryan got the story from - a state representative in Wisconsin, iirc - said she heard this directly from the child himself.  She has, since, had to walk her statement back.  She's now trying to say she heard him say it on TV.  Except, according to the man in question, he never said anything of the sort on TV or otherwise.

The source is a book: An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny by Laura Schroff.

The story of Laura and Maurice had nothing to do with the school lunch program.  It had to do with a little boy who was so hungry, he said, he felt as if he was being punched in his stomach.  So hungry that he went into a dumpster, ate rat droppings and had to have his stomach pumped.

A little boy [all grown up now - 30 years old, aamof] now being used as a prop by politicians who want to take away food from children like Maurice and claim they're helping them by doing so.
