View Diary: Paul Ryan's brown bag lunch story wasn't entirely untrue. Just the part that mattered. (197 comments)

  •  Maybe Paul Ryan should hear my story (5+ / 0-)

I got brown paper bag lunches in elementary school. That's because 2 days in a row my lunchbox with a thermos got knocked over in the schoolyard and the thermos broke. My mom got pissed, so after that it was brown paper bag lunches with a can of soda.

      •  we bought our boys' lunches (0+ / 0-)

except the year they went to a magnet school where all the kids got free breakfasts and lunches so as not to create apartheid-lines for the free lunch kids vs. the paid lunch kids.

Also, the cafeteria DID NOT have a "snack line" -- either you brought lunch from home or you ate what they put on the tray. I sometimes sent lunches with the boys if what they put on the tray was truly going to suck that day; a quarter for their choice of two milks or one and a piece of fruit, and PBJ on whole-wheat (with or without cream cheese, their choice) unless we had extra money; then it'd be ham or beef bologna and cheese, which their dad carried most days. The  cafeteria usually had apples and bananas; some days, there were oranges. If I could get them, I'd put tangelos in the sack lunches (not brown paper; we bought reusable canvas, and those blue-ice cold blocks).
