I love this diary, and the vast majority of the comments here.  But here is my question:

Many diaries on Kos are set up as a "us against them," "Democrats against Republicans."   And I won't go into the details or guesses of what makes a Democrat a "good" Democrat or what makes a Republican a "bad" republican.

But judging by tons of comments here, if Democrats are for a greater level of economic freedom, environmental responsibility, the walk back of corporate sponsored government, etc., and Republicans are for the antithesis of those things...

HAVE THE REPUBLICANS ALREADY WON this game?  It sounds like the diarist thinks so.

    •  Well, I've been waiting for the pendulum to swing (5+ / 0-)

in the other direction for about 35 years. No sign of it doing so yet, at least around here. It may happen after I'm dead, but it won't do me any good at that point.

We need not just a political change (i.e. put the Democrats in power) but a complete legal overhaul, which will be much harder to accomplish.

I find the power structure of the modern Democratic Party to be what once were moderate to conservative Republicans. I find the Republicans of today to be usurpers who have co-opted the party and the label "conservative" as cover for their Dominionist intentions.

Hillary is more conservative than say, a guy like Dick Lugar. A guy like Dick Lugar could not win a Republican primary anywhere in the country. I find guys like Grover Norquist to be economic radicals and guys like Karl Rove to be architects of race baiting, but even guys like that are being chased from the "Republican" party today.

In other words, IMO the modern power structure of the Dem party is corporatist first and last (God bless the Wydens and Warrens), meanwhile, the Republicans today are literally closer in ideology to the Taliban as they are to Eisenhower.

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires. - Susan B. Anthony

Well, given that the Democrats have adopted most of their policies . . . ?

Dogs from the street can have all the desirable qualities that one could want from pet dogs. Most adopted stray dogs are usually humble and exceptionally faithful to their owners as if they are grateful for this kindness. -- H.M. Bhumibol Adulyadej
