Batterer killing his victim: Matter In Place.  Like dirt in the garden, it's expected, normal, "right."  It was an accident, he didn't mean it, he just got carried away, etc.  Lesser charges, less jail time.

Victim (or victim's child) killing a batterer in the act of beating the victim?  Matter Out Of Place.  Dirt in the bedroom.  Transgressive, unexpected, "wrong".

This is why most women who are in jail for murder killed the men who were abusing them, and why they're serving more time than the men who killed women they were (or had been) in relationships with.

I refer to Sir Patrick Stewart's comment that he would have been glad if his mother had killed his father, who terrorized his childhood, although he wasn't struck himself.  When a boy kills the man who's beating his mother, the question isn't how guilty is that boy.  The question is not "why didn't she leave?"  The question is, "How did we fail the woman and the boy?"  The question is, "How can we do better?"

We can start by valuing a woman's life over a case of beer.

Thank you for putting into words so much more clearly than I could!
