  •  Should Democrats pit races against each other? (10+ / 0-)

Should Democrats say, we are fine with imposing on Asians a disadvantage based on their race as long as that disadvantage placed on Asians based on their race benefits blacks and Latinos based on their race?

or, should Democrats say, the biggest impediment to a child having opportunity in today's economy is socio-economic background, and seek to benefit students that come from disadvantaged backgrounds to give them the same opportunities that the children of wealthy parents -- of all races -- have?

I vote for option 2.  And you have to realize that  a system of affirmative action based on socio-economic status will (if you look at race) disproportionately benefit minorities, because minorities make up a disproportionate number of poor households.  Affirmative action based on socio-economic class will target the extra opportunity to those who need it most (people from disadvantaged backgrounds) without the divisive notion of pitting races against each other based on race.
