I think most defenders of affirmative action agree that it was, and should be a short-term fix. There was a time, when african americans were just climbing out of the hole that Jim Crow put them into, when affirmative action was defensible. But with every passing year, it is closer and closer to its expiration date.  At this speaking, we are 18 years past Prop 209. Regardless of how you felt about prop 209 (and it was indeed nothing more than naked wedge politics), what's done is done. You need to ask yourself whether it is prudent now to try to turn back the clock to 1995, just to settle old scores? Do you really want to risk splitting up the multi-ethnic coalition that democrats have cobbled together where in CA?
