  •  We've watched the local shelter for a year now. (10+ / 0-)

    We live in an area where most of the dogs at the shelter are pit bull terriers (probably 80%) and the rest are labs.  I like both of those dogs, but neither fits our lifestyle.    

    Koosah kid's autism makes us a bit pickier about temperaments and breeds.  Shelties are sensitive and easy to train and devoted to their families.  Not prone to running away.  The shrill barking is their biggest fault.  

    Our shelter actually imports small dogs like Chihuahuas and Yorkies from California shelters to make up for the imbalance.  The California shelters get tons of puppy mill small dogs and so many of them would be euthanized because they can't find enough homes for them down there.
