  •  This is the bigest fucking lie of all. (25+ / 0-)

I am a retired nurse with an extensive education and I put my husband through medical school in San Francisco from 1966 to 1970.

First, I am now 69 with a lot of chronic medical problems.  I recently moved from California to Texas.  California is highly competitive medically so having medicare was sufficient for me to get what I needed.

Texas is a closed system.  Even with a supplemental policy with their "network" system, if I am in Dallas instead of my homebase I am not covered.

I had a major accident but not life threatening.  I asked what are the costs to be told multiple times and across the board -- we do not know.  This is for hospital, ER, physical therapy, and specialists doctors.

They do not like being asked intelligent questions.  Being labeled non compliant patient is like being labeled mentally insane.

There is no reason not to posts codes and costs that are universally now used for insurance companies as well as medicare.  It would still take a substantive education to use them right.

You have no choices in a medical situation that is life threatening.

The myth is we would be careful users of medical care, knowing when and how we were going to pay.  The truth is no one will tell you that up front.

In my case, it was 8 weeks before I got the ER bill but they made it due in 3 weeks.  I divided it in thirds, wrote a letter, and sent it will a check.  I paid exactly as I said I would and it took me 3 months and I paid on the first of each month.  in spite of that, it  went to collections because they have an automatic policy of sending the uncollected after 30 days.  This is also in spite of the fact the hospital administrator said they would work with me.

I got the collections letter two weeks after I was paid up and no matter what it is now a late pay on my credit report which makes things even more difficult in the future.
