  •  Seriously. (2+ / 0-)

Of course I had to go through conniption fits with DHL to get the blood samples transported and find a competent local nurse to draw blood, but in the end it was quite reasonable in a DIY kind of way.
I people in the States had that kind of option, but with ambiguous pricing, it's just about impossible to do that.

    •  Actually, it's increasingly an option in the US (4+ / 0-)

...there is a growing industry of lower-cost blood labs, generally asssociated with urgent-care clinics, and often specifically with those embedded in pharmacies.

Theranos (a startup, using different technologies than most) has started having embedded labs at Walgreens, and is an extreme case -- http://www.wired.com/... -- but when I priced regular-old blood draws for my thyroid labs through a local non-chain urgent care, they were a fraction of the cost they'd have been through my regular doctor if my insurance stopped covering them (around $70 vs. $300, although the former is cash up front.)

      •  Now that's interesting. (1+ / 0-)

The NHS now has a method of taking a very minor amount of blood for tests and running it through some form of spectroscope (?) It takes about 5 minutes to get results. I wonder if that's what Walgreens, etc. are doing.
$70 is amazingly cheap and, I would think, a decent alternative for people in the States.
