  •  We buy sales, and we stretch things. (10+ / 0-)

To feed five of us for example I have to get two boxes of Hamburger helper (I swear when I was a kid my mom did it with one, but the size of what's inside the box has shrunk by about 1/2). So I use two boxes of hamburger helper, but only one pound of hamburger or turkey burger. Then I add some veggies (which ones depends what kind it is) and it stretches to feed five. Or I take 3/4 a pound of chicken, or sometimes even 1/2 and make chicken potpie or chicken and dumplings, so I get more meals out of one chicken that way. So if I get a big pack of chicken legs (say 12 in each package) and they're also buy one get one.. I may get 24 chicken legs for $5-$6. I re-package those 5 per dinner and one with 4 (which would be used for soup or a casserole). Then I use that to plan my meals, but that's  5 dinner meats for $5.

    •  I try to make multiple meals from everything now. (6+ / 0-)

Partner will eat less at supper if I tell him that whatever is left-over will be his lunch tomorrow.  He grew up fighting over meals and instinctively goes for a huge first portion.  I have worked long and hard to ease that instinct.

We are able to get 1$ meals from tuna and bacon or sausage, as well as chicken.  I have to spend more for the other stuff; but then I pull veggies or fruits that I grew from the freezer.  We have to watch his carbs, so now I fill him up with extra green beans or canned veggies bought on sale.  If it's not on sale I won't usually buy anything anymore.  This winter has been hard on the business, slow sales and huge propane bills.
