  •  ha! we get so BORED trying to decide what to (5+ / 0-)

have for dinner every day! "what do you want for dinner? no, what do YOU want for dinner?" & back & forth! Because there's only 3 of us and 2 are very limited in what they can or will eat, about half the time husband and I each fix our own! we're big on quick-prep stuff! lots of roasted meats & steamed veg, items that will cook in the time it takes rice, etc, etc.

It's pretty awkward trying to cook "interesting" stuff for one (me)! I mean, how do you do a proper set of dishes for an Indian meal for one person!?! I do get some respite because we have a family tradition of "birthday kid gets whatever they want for dinner & "cake"", so I do sometimes get Indian take-out, 8-)... of course that is available all year round, but I can't bring myself to spend that much $$$$ if it's not a special occasion, 8-) !!!!

my darling mother was not an enthusiastic cook, although she was competent with the materials she knew. a number of things I never encountered til I was away from home because she told me once that it wasn't worth the fight to try to get us to eat whatever! She'd just chase us out of the house when she wanted corned-beef & cabbage, so she didn't have to listen to us whinge about the smell! I expect that's why I was in my 30's before broccoli crossed my horizon! At least I didn't have to eat TOO much mushy/gray veg! I must say some of the canned corn today is better than in the 50's, but I'll never touch another canned pea now that I can get petit-pois from the frozen section!

Dear Husband's mom, I don't really know how good a cook she was, also competent, but he tells me he was cooking for himself from about age 8? I don't think the other 3 were as hard to feed as he was, so she let him!

"real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...
