  •   "the 'gender wage gap' ... disappears" Really? (5+ / 0-)

Funny, 20 years ago, when I was completing my Master's in economics, I studied gender disparity in pay. I looked at the pay of both men and women, controlling for education, experience, age, etc., standard wage study information. But I added in variables on whether the workers in the industry in which people worked were majority male or female. I surmised that the more women in an industry, the smaller the pay gap between men and women would be (assuming discrimination would be lessened).

What did I find? The pay gap was nearly identical, no matter what the industry, but that the pay of BOTH men and women is lower if the industry has more women and men, controlling for all other variables. I further found that the pay difference got worse the MORE women in the industry, and was even present for single workers, under age 25 with advanced degrees (i.e., the group least likely to have children). The phenomenon was even more pronounced when I eliminated the fashion industry (the only one at the time where women consistently made more than men). If the pay gap is due to women's choices, why are men impacted?

Aside: I actually work in a female-dominated industry, healthcare, and in a majority-female company, so I'm shooting myself in the foot, income-speaking, as a male. It's interesting that the biggest issue my female-led company faces is the difficultly of work/life balance because this company's employees tend to be type-A personalities who can't leave work alone. We have to consistently remind employees it is not an expectation to check email on weekends or vacation. Just proves women are less productive, right?

    What a maroon.
