....the so-called greatest MALE philosophical thinkers of classical Greece.

"And aided and abetted by the man who was later to be canonized Saint Cyril (the Christian bishop of Alexandria) Christian monks barbarously hacked to pieces with oyster shells that remarkable mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher of Alexandria's school of Neoplatonic philosophy, Hypatia.  For this woman, now recognized as one of the greatest scholars of all time, was according to Cyril an iniquitous female who had even presumed, against God's commandments, to teach men."

Riane Eisler's The Chalice and the Blade gives a fascinating, in-depth analysis of how the female-centric partnership societies that pre-dated and fostered, say, a classical Greece, were overrun and all but decimated by the aggressive, acquisitive male-centric dominator societies.  It's especially remarkable how many parallels there are to today.

It's hard to envision how one would even do that, but it does certainly go beyond simple murder to a statement that her mere existence was a deep affront and challenge to their core view of the world -- which of course they believed as true thoroughly enough to justify such an act.

Obviously and luckily for you, you've never stepped on a half clam shell in a lake.   We used to be very careful before we put our weight on each foot--- every step we took.  They cut deep and clean, so, yes, she could easily have been sliced to death, rather than hacked.  And I'd rather not picture it.
As for why men would do that, you're spot on.
