Colbert as Late Show host doesn't pan out, either because of ratings, compared to The Tonight Show and middle-American old farts choosing the safe and bland Jimmy Fallon (Colbert is still too much of an improv for anyone who isn't young and/or progressive to 'get') or a lousy working relationship and conflict of interest with CBS bosses. After a couple of years, he leaves to replace Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show.

Basically, everyone loses. Except for Jimmy Fallon and wingnuts.

Thinking about it, Jon Stewart should have been CBS' choice as Late Show host. Stewart is sufficiently mainstream enough and is ridiculously respectful and courteous to conservative guests, enough for them to appear again on his show. Colbert taking over from Stewart would have re-invigorated The Daily Show, which has been less than inspired in the last two years, hence Colbert finally winning an overdue Emmy.

So, yeah, under the circumstances, Stewart as Late Show host with Colbert taking over on the Daily Show made a lot more sense.

    /not optimistic

    •  Btw, watch Fallon become more conservative (0+ / 0-)

or rather his show being more welcoming of conservatives and their point of view, as Leno's Tonight Show was (Schwarzeneggar announcing he was running for Governor, Dennis Miller's piss-poor unfunny jokes, etc.)

If Colbert pulls in a younger demographic, as CBS obviously expects, Fallon will pander more to old farts and wingnuts. If he's not already doing that.
