    But I will say that it is important to try and understand the cultural context as much as possible when reading such material.

    Ancient people were not stupid. They were credible reporters, however they didn't always have our understanding of the natural world (scientifically speaking) so that their descriptions could be acceptable to anyone but anthropologists, historians and clerics.

    Journals, stories, diaries, letters, stele, cylinder seals, bass reliefs, cave paintings are important. They might not be literal, or they might be--but in a specific cultural context, but no less enlightening.
