Since Occupiers chanted we are the 99% it has become a small part of the national discourse. I wish someone mentioned the idea that if government doesn't provide somethings for the poor, working and middle class the the rich suck it all up. Timing is everything. If someone in Occupy had talked about Keynesianism or stimulus it might be a bigger part of national debate. The message is not getting out there.

    •  When Jimmy Carter was president (8+ / 0-)

      the 1% owned 9% of America's assets.

Now after Reagan, two Bushes, and a Clinton and Obama that's gone up to 27%.

      9% to 27%.

All from changes to taxation and subsidy and oligopoly policies.

Yeah, we need Occupy. Big time.

I'm glad it did not seek the relatively low hanging fruit of an extra bridge or eight-lane in Birmingham. Occupy was and is not primarily comprised of Keynesians. It is to the left of that centrist philosophy. I personally believe in doing the right thing by all in society and our world whether or not it primes the capitalist pump. I want system change away from neoliberalism to a deep democracy of the economy for the good of all my global brothers and sisters, but I'll take some fries with it sure.

something out there now competing with the Republican idea that cutting government workers is the way out of a recession.

needs to be carried by the left. In framing the issues, people need to see the clear immoral dimensions to the hateful, looting, and scapegoating ways of the Republicans. Direct action needs to be employed about so much that is wrong about the way the U.S. treat its workers/unemployed and the poor.  Divide and conquer needs to be called out for the anti-Solidarity strategy that it is. In the very act of doing so, solidarity may yet emerge. Thank you so much for your comments.
