  •  I had that cartoon in my office until I was told (3+ / 0-)

it was religious discrimination.  Gary Larson is one of the all-time great cartoonists.

    •  WTF?!?! Religious discrimination? (5+ / 0-)

The Far Side had great respect for religion and science both. Larson wrote about the difficulty he always had when he touched on religion. Like making God lead 1065 to 0 in a Jeopardy match. And admitted a great sin of his was showing man and dinosaurs as contemporaneous. Anyone who said that panel was promoting religious discrimination was an idiot.

GOP 2014 strategy -- Hire clowns, elephants, and a ringmaster and say "a media circus" has emerged and blame Democrats for lack of progress. Have pundits agree that "both sides are to blame" and hope the public will stay home on election day.

Many of the young Earth crowd believed people and dinosaurs lived together, but some of them were convinced that dinosaur fossils were planted by Satan to trick people into falling into his clutches.  Some people who were home-schooled were very insistent that their beliefs are the only right, sacred and holy thoughts.

It was necessary to decide which fights were worth it.  Teaching about the effects of global warming was more of a concern than keeping the cartoon on the bulletin board over my desk.

that it had to be a choice at all. Wow. I hope you broke thru the shell of at least one kid who will accept reality when they grow up.

them facts and let them come to their own conclusions.  They were community college students so their parents could not legitimately attack me for 'luring them away from their faith'.   My own fascination and awe at the complexity of the universe also seemed to be catching.  Students liked my teaching.  It was a self-appointed committee from the community that were outraged at my 'godlessness'.  (I am not personally an atheist, but do have friends who are atheists or agnostics.)
