  •  WP - The federal government could not apply a (0+ / 0-)

new Fairness Doctrine to Cable TV/Internet. However, each individual, local, government agency could impose some type of Fairness Doctrine as a condition of service. The federal government couldn't impose itself in those local decisions. There is no legal basis.

Given that there are now hundreds of TV channels available on CATV and hundreds of radio stations available over the Internet, I don't think a new Fairness Doctrine is good politics and I don't think it would survive a constitutional challenge. I also don't think there are any real advocates in the Congress or White House for a new Fairness Doctrine. I was in broadcasting during the old FD and everyone hated it. The effect of the old FD was to inhibit political speech.
