  •  Money corrupts doctors as it does any (18+ / 0-)

mere human.  However, doctors start thinking themselves gods when abject mere peons start praising their name.  It goes to their head, as it would anyone.

My late husband had diabetes.  We learned, soon enough, to get respect in the ER (after many episodes) to dress him in "couture" clothing.  If he came into the ER in the mud-spattered clothes he wore during a day of work on his land, he was treated like shit by the doctors.

So, we had a set of clothes ready for ER visits, a Rolex watch, a gaudy "leisure suit," untrammeled shoes.  And a gold pen to boot.

Only then, he was respected by the medical staff and given the care he needed.  Sad, but true.

Doctors, like others of "upper class" are well versed in the signals of power.  The powerless (muddy, dirty, worn, run-down etc) are ignored and blamed for their illness.

    •  I don't know that it's that (0+ / 0-)

I think it's more that the more grungy you look, the less likely it is you have insurance - and the less likely the hospital or doctor will get paid.

They'll also assume you don't know how to follow directions, and possibly are unable to read the instructions for your care.

If you look 'professional' it's assumed you have either insurance or money or both, that they'll get paid, and that you can understand the instructions for your care.

None of those are a given, of course.

    •  Doesn't seem to apply (0+ / 0-)

To college faculty. (People may think they're naive or wrong, but not stupid. And generally, academics pay their bills on time.)
