  •  I and many other snakers have noticed that many (3+ / 0-)

    species of rattlers seem less apt to "sound off" nowadays. Apparently when they rattle and give away their position, it makes them a target for humans with shovels or rocks, so the survivors are learning that it's best to not rattle and to sit still and depend on their cryptic coloring to hide them, instead. I've seen this trend in pygmy rattlesnakes in Florida, and others have pointed it out among Timber Rattlesnakes in the northeast, as well as rattlers in the west.

    In the end, reality always wins.
