    It does seem that NASA's home-grown rocket suffers from more than a few too many compromises made for non-engineering reasons.

    I too would not cry to see it cancelled, and think the money saved could be very effectively spent elsewhere.

      NASA's always been in the business of building rockets in the worst possible way.  It's just that these days no one actually cares if NASA's rockets fly.

        1) Any design ideally has to maximize the number of Congressional districts containing contractors for that project.

        2) NASA has no budget stability - you can't fund projects that will take years to bring to fruition if they constantly have to be re-budgeted every year.

        3) When everything goes right, there will still be plenty of people asking why are we wasting all that money in space? And when things go wrong...
