Here is another one for you, since you hit it out of the park.

What if the US lost the Revolution?  Would we all be living in Southern Canada?

    •  that's harder to say. (2+ / 0-)

the british didn't have a strong immigration policy to the colonies (Australia, NZ, Canada, India, africa)

so without the infusion of ideas and the fierce
enterprise system, a lot of things wouldn't have gotten
      done or built.

I suspect the US would be more like Australia,
and american colonials would have become the
bulwark of the british empire.  Colonial American
troops would join regiments and crush Africa, South America,
      etc.

That the US would have minimally industrialized without the protectionism of the 19th century,  New England would be much smaller,  the mill towns wouldn't have built up
      everything from Camden to Bridgeport.

much of the US would resemble the South, good roads, canals, railroads but all connected to ports, very little interstate highways,  instead the US would be divided
along watersheds, and resources would go overseas.

sure NYC would be a big city, but it would be a trade and export focus, mostly materials goods, and perhaps pricing of raw materials headed to industrial england.

The US would racially be much whiter, the Brits never trucked much with Slavery so that would have ended sooner but the labor for the south would likely be indian peasants from South India, so, the US would have had a race issue tied around asians.

The brits would bring Chinese coolies from the Far East to build up the west ports and transport, and with far fewer transit nationwide, i suspect that would have been a bigger population.

I suspect the US would have half the population or less, technical progress would be behind maybe 50 years or more, we'd have far fewer universities, the great libraries would be fewer,  the progressive reforms wouldn't have happened.

we'd have  a big caste/class structure, the coutnry would be very much a 1% nation with Lord Baltimore having lots of influence.
