  •  Don't count Childers out. (7+ / 0-)

Travis Childers will likely be rated an underdog in the general election, but he does have a plausible path to victory. He has held elective office (MS-1, a white-majority district in the northeast part of the state) & has a considerable level of name-identification. Democrats in Mississippi, as in the rest of the Deep South, have a relatively high floor of support because of the black vote, but a ceiling that remains below 50% because its white voters are so conservative. But we should remember that in 2011 Mississippi voters rejected the "personhood" amendment, so obviously there are enough sensible people there to potentially tip an election, so McDaniel's extremism might yet be his undoing. As always, Democrats seem to have problems with motivating their base voters to turn out in non-presidential election cycles, but McDaniel's history of insensitive (to put it mildly) comments on race might prove to be what it takes to motivate our people to turn out at the polls.

A McDaniel win tonight will move this race from "safe Republican" to "lean Republican" (maybe even "tossup" if he keeps opening his mouth), so there's no reason why we shouldn't greet this as a positive. And if McDaniel does win the general election, a sane Republican gets replaced by a crazy Republican, but in the end that wouldn't change the Senate's vote-count.

So if you're living in or near Mississippi, contact the Childers campaign with

      1) an offer of your time to work, particularly on voter registration, help with IDs etc...

      2) contacts that they can get together with (churches, civic groups, organizations) to meet potential voters face to face

      3) $$$$.  I put that third because without the other two, you're wasting it.

    •  So many crazy Republicans (2+ / 0-)

have got to be destroying what's left of the brand.  How can an intelligent thoughtful person admit that he's a Republican anymore?
