    they will point to the wreckage and proclaim it as proof that Government doesn't work. Federal Government that is. Everything would be fine if it were just left to the discretion of State Governments and local elites; meaning themselves.

    They've been playing this same game for over a hundred years. Ever since the end of re-construction. It's worked well for them because it taps into a deeply ingrained culture of racism and white supremacy.

    Fifty years after Freedom Summer, the deep South remains largely two separate societies. One white and one Black. Less so, certainly, than in the heyday of Jim Crow Apartheid but that's setting the bar so low as to be just above outright slavery.

    Exploiting this racial division has powered southern "Conservatism" throughout its history.

    It could hardly be otherwise. The essence of the Conservative ethos is that the past was a better place than than the present or the future. In the South, the past has a particular coloration.    

    Nothing human is alien to me.
