  •  Miers' hearing an open mic to American ears (none)
Georgia, what surprises me is the number of people (not to say you're one of them) who've decided Harry Reid is deaf and dumb to this extraordinary opportunity. The guy didn't fall off a turnip truck yesterday. He's among canniest of the canny. Don't you agree?

Her past gives us ground to bring up all the scandals which Bush has desperately been trying to bury.

Which is curious on its face. That a close friend, a known loyalist, a practiced legal loopholer and consummate BushCo insider advanced even as far as the shortlist is vastly puzzling to me. Harriet Meirs proverbially "knows too much"--the whole idea should have been scuttled long ago (by Rove or another advisor--heck, by Harriet herself, unless she's as blinkered to the threat she poses as Bush appears to be).

That she got the nomination, to my mind, is recklessness on Bush's part, for the very reasons you describe. The danger is too obvious--it cannot have escaped Reid. I can't have escaped anyone, except maybe George. Maybe the neocons are through with Bush and Miers has been recruited as his unwitting public executioner? He wanted her and somebody cynically let him have his way.

Speculation, but I think there's more here than meets the eye. Harry's playing it the way he is it for a reason. Nothing about Harriet Miers' nomination to the SCOTUS makes any Democrat "feel good" (except in a- "to whom do we owe this unexpected good fortune!" sort of way).

    Is nothing secular?
