By buying into the Republicans' cynical attempts to define Miers as some sort of "moderate", the Democrats just made the hearings a hundred times more difficult in terms of building a case against her. That's part of what made the Roberts hearings such a sham -- the GOP and their media fellow-travelers went into spin overdrive to cast him as an all-American aw-shucks nice guy with a lovely wife and family, the Democrats did nothing to counteract the spin, even helping it along on occasion, and by the time the hearings occurred the confirmation was a done deal, as public opinion on Roberts had already been cemented in a favorable way, and "undoing" his image was now a task too monumental to be accomplished without the proverbial dead girl or live boy.

I would have thought that they would not repeat that mistake.

Republicans oppose abortion -- it happens eighteen years too early.
