"You know how I feel about Roger."

I used to say this so often when he was a Red Sox that I may have blown my anonymity if anyone is reading this who knew me in the 80s-90s.

So much about him rubs me the wrong way that I don't know where to start.

He had a reputation for stopping losing streaks but my memory is that he also stopped a few winning streaks, including the Morgan Magic winning streak.

As he left the game last night I said to my mom, before the next inning is over he'll have his excuse ready about how he is hurt.  As he was walking down the tunnel to the clubhouse the announcers were already talking about the hamstring.

Other guys play hurt and don't use their injuries as an excuse.  Other guys play hurt and still win games (love that bloody Red Sock, even though Schilling is a GoOP).  The famous blister excuse for Game Six '86 was a joke, although he is still denying he asked out of that game.  And I will always believe he deliberately got himself thrown out of the 1990 game by Cooney because he was pitching badly and wanted to take the focus off of the "he can't pitch in the big games" criticism.

Clemens always impressed me as the kind of jock who was allowed to be so self-focused because of his talent that he never had to give any consideration to anything else, especially the importance of a star being nice to the little guy.  His interviews sound like GWB is giving them--listen to him the next time he is talking to the press and you can imagine his thought process (such as it is) being channeled by the pResident himself.

I am trying to keep an open mind about Texas--I know Houston is a bluedrop city in a red state and that DeLay and Cornyn and even Bush's political days are numbered (can we even dream of a return to the 60s when the home of Lyndon Johnson and Barbara Jordan was solid blue?).

But I will never root for any team that has Clemens.  Now all of you guys "know how I feel about Roger."

Politics is like driving. To go backward, put it in R. To go forward, put it in D.
