Just back from Central America, 7th time this year, total almost two months there.  The clouds of my gringo ignorance are parting, but there's still so much more to dispel.  Imagine the rest of my co-Yanquis entrenched in their prejudice and pride!

Asked the cab driver if he agreed that 90% of Norteamericanos could not name ONE famous Central American.  I thought of Arias; he thought of Noriega.  That was about it.  Not even sure if 10% could name but one.

Shakira's from Colombia; Salma Hayek from Mexico.  Sheesh!

And -- having hung in the peace circles most of these decades, it's interesting to talk to people who don't like Arias, Ortega, or Castro, and try to get their reasons out of them.  Trying to find out if they are echoing US or upper class propaganda, trying to please me, or think that way based on some data I've never seen.

But my impression -- and hope -- is that while the US is bogged down in the Middle East, Latin America is seeing its opportunity to make a mass jailbreak, and will succeed at it.  (Kind of what Vietnam did for them, for awhile.)

Ignorance is the enemy.  We have a long, long fight ahead...

If a thousand men were not to pay their tax bills this year, that would not be a violent and bloody measure, as it would be to pay them, and enable the State...
