  •  I'm really torn here (3.66 / 3)

As I mentioned in the front-page post, announcing Sarbanes' retirement, I want to see an African-American run for Sarbanes' Senate seat. First of all, I would love to see my state elect someone that looks like me and could be a role model for my nephews. Secondly, I'm curious to see whether Maryland really is as "liberal" as it is made out to be. Living in Southern Maryland, I question how progressive on racial issues our state really is at times. I think running an African-American for the Senate would be a nice way to test my theory. Finally, I want to see more minorities in the Senate and I think Maryland since it is supposed to be progressive lead in that effort.

With that said, I'm really ambivalent about Mfume's run for Sarbanes seat. Quite frankly, I question whether he will have the ability to get cross-over votes from non-progressive whites or whether his run will stir up latent racial animosities against African-Americans via his work at the NAACP. Typically, he's a strong voice for progressives (although he disappointed me in his recent This Week with George S' appearances). He's a well-known figure. I'm sure even Fox News watchers are familiar with him. He won't have to waste time w/"getting to know you" electioneering.

This race is going to be really interesting. I just have serious qualms about it!!
