  •  It's Interesting (4.00 / 2)

I just hope for a multifaceted field, and not just Black Urban Candidate v. White Suburban Candidate (Duncan) that will get reductive and potentially divisive.

If we end up with a Senate with Barack Obama and Kweisi Mfume, wow.  Too bad Strom's not around to see it.

      Trent Lott is channeling Strom...

      •  actually, they've got someone (none / 0)

If the question is simply, "does the GOP have a black candidate for this race?", they do: Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, who's quite impressive.
        •  Will he run? (none / 0)

        •  He's the A-lister (none / 0)

Steele is the 800 pound gorilla for this seat, but he is still a Republican. Even with life-sized Michael Steele posters up in the City on election day (message: "Join me" translation "Ehrlich- Steele is the black people's choice") the ticket still garnered the traditional 10% of the black vote to Townsend's 90%.

And having a black candidate on the statewide ticket won't be a boon for turnout in the Republican base areas of Western MD and the Eastern Shore. I'm guessing they'll avoid showing his picture out there as much as possible.

According to a report I heard the other day, The GOP's leading candidate was Erlich's wife.   That this would be fantastically stupid was not mentioned.

see my post further down - if her proclivity for using racial epithets gets some publicity it could put a hurting on her and the Gov.

Even the racists would be taken aback at such ugly words coming from the mouth of a pristine white lady like Kendal

Can you imagine? Two Black progressives in the Senate? The Good Old Boys will be howling down in Hell.

          Obama and Mfume
I think the comparison is a bit facile - they are of different generations and quite different politics.

They do have a lighter complexion in common, as well as no aversion to speaking standard English. They're not worried that their black constituents will find them "too white."

          •  Strom and Jesse in Hell (none / 0)

The comparison is facile, yes, in that they're very different men. But all that Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond will see, from their veranda overlooking a lake of fire, is two clever, charismatic Black pols of conviction stinking up their old stomping grounds with the kind of goo-goo politics they hated so. Strom and Jesse will curse inwardly and spit, missing the cuspidor and instead dribbling on their shoes, perhaps commenting awkwardly that it's hotter than usual, and discover that their mint juleps have turned to bile.

            •  Haven't figured that out yet (none / 0)

But then, Feingold voted to confirm Ashcroft. Go figure. Still, that nasty hiccup aside, Obama has a remarkably progressive legislative record.

Mfume, of course, is a total Washingtonian and certainly supped at the Clintons' table from time to time, but from what I remember, I'd peg him as being solidly to the left of the center-right Dem center. My only reservation about him is that he may prove too cautious. I guess we'll see -- should be a helluva primary.

I guess he and the Pope must share a really good proctologist or something. Seems like he checked out ages ago.

Well, soon enough, then, I'm sure he'll be joining his old buddy Strom on that veranda on the lake of fire, and by gum, will Strom be upset with the news he brings down with him.

    •  Duncan isn't running (none / 0)

It was posted somewhere here on Sunday, by a person who had received an e-mail from Duncan stating thus. He still prefers to run for Governor.

Kinda wish I was going to be back home for this one: O'Malley vs. Duncan!  Balmer vs. D.C. suburbs!  Yow!
