  •  Mikulski will probably retire in 2010 (2+ / 0-)

She'll be 73 then. Probably the favorite to replace her would be Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, who is black, an Iraq war vet, and was Obama's classmate at Harvard Law.

I see zero evidence, though, that Hoyer is vulnerable. MD-05 was 30% black in 2000 (probably 40% today) and he has excellent relations with the black community. He has also been instrumental in directing big bucks (and thus jobs) to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, which is in the district.

is very impressive and would make an excellent choice.  I don't know if we can spare him yet, however!

I always thought that Mikulski's seat was going to be O'Malley's next move, and for that she would have to run one more time because it would be pretty unseemly for him to run off out of Annapolis so quickly.

He's been giving Brown some high profile work around the state.  Either he's grooming a successor, or he wants Brown to run for Senate.

        •  Mikulski MUST go (0+ / 0-)

Whether it's by retirement, or by being booted the fuck out of the Senate in the primary, she is fast becoming one of the biggest problem Democrats in the Senate, right up there with Feinstein, Ben Nelson, and Mary Landrieu.

My girlfriend swears if no one else steps up to the plate, she'll run herself.

Hillieberman voted "aye" for Kyl-Lieberman. I vote "Hell, NO!" for Hillieberman. No more hawks in the White House.

    •  Brown hasn't shown he can run a campaign. (0+ / 0-)

He looked like a potted plant in the O'Malley run for the governorship.

But perhaps you are more up on what the internal dynamics of the party in MD are at the state level than I am...
