    See Obama's war?

For, without any visible strategy for victory, Barack is recommending the same course LBJ took after the death of JFK. Johnson bombed North Vietnam in 1964, landed Marines in 1965 and built U.S. forces from 16,000 advisers on Nov. 22, 1963, to 525,000 troops in January of 1969.

Gradual escalation, which is exactly what Barack is recommending.

LBJ never thought through to the end game: how to break Hanoi, withdraw and leave a South peaceful, prosperous and pro-American.

Has Barack thought his way through to how this war ends in victory and we withdraw all U.S. ground troops from Afghanistan? For this writer cannot see anywhere on the horizon any such ending.

there being no end on the horizon. One might justifiably believe that this is part of "The Long War" formerly known as the Global War on Terror, to which no end is intended. We will always be fighting off the people who's lands are occupied by our military, which in turn will be used to justify our continued presence. Too many corporations will continue to benefit from this. Too many others will suffer and die as a result of it.

The fact that many of these resource rich and/or strategically located lands are Muslim will make it easier to sell the pretexts to the public.

I fear Obama has been sucked into this. Am I the only one who has noticed the changes since his pre-FISA house party gathering with Senator Rockefeller?

Destroy out of control extremist training camps in Afghanistan good.

Try to turn Afghanistan into modern Jeffersonian democracy and beacon unto the world, madness.

Using standard US Counter Insurgancy doctrine would require something like 400,000 troops and a decade or so, would also require massive investment in aid in terms of education etc.

British Indian Empire tried 3 times and failed 3 times, that is where the now troublesome "Tribal Areas" of Pakistan come from it is the bits of Afghanistan stolen by Britain and held onto by Pakistan when we left but never really "conquered".

The Soviets took 10 years peaked at 200,000 troops, were not in the slightest worried about Human Rights etc, and had the strength of a superpower on the other side of the river.

At the moment he has to sound tough to get elected but I hope he does not end up turning Afghanistan into the mistake of his presidency

The wrong force for the right war
