without knowing what the Son of SAFETEA-LU looks like, and the fact that the Hwy Trust Fund will be broke again on September 30, 2009, I don't think I mind seeing it being a Maintenance First stimulus. Most states barely keep up with the maintenance they have, if they do at all. There's at least 64 billion in hwy projects that are ready to go, most of it deferred maintenance, and another 13 billion in transit that's ready to go, also likely deferred maintenance.

But I'd love to see increased transit in my area.

      •  None of these would prevent it from being ... (0+ / 0-)

        ... a maintenance mostly stimulus ...

... and, indeed, the replacement of old diesel hog city buses is a form of deferred maintenance of its own ...

... but it still must be said that the insistence on three months to break ground puts in a massive bias toward road projects, and waiting until a bill is proposed and then debating it as the clock ticks down to the inauguration does not seem to be a promising plan.

Whatever "break ground in three month" projects we can come up with that do, in fact, push us in the direction of a sustainable economy, both financially and ecologically, we should be pushing forward.
