This past summer, one of our stray children, someone who spent some years with us and is still searching out her way, came over to help me clear weeds in the yard. She was digging where the old wood pile was and suddenly exclaimed, "there's bricks under here!"

She got a trowel and hand dug the dirt away, then swept off a small patio of herringbone bricks. She has never accomplished much in her life and she gives up easily when things get hard. But she worked steadily for a couple of hours to uncover the bricks.

Reading your diary, I see us all, sweeping away the last bits of dirt, pride shining in our faces.
