and I love the perspective you've taken.

With that said, I did take exception with one thing.  Could we stop stereotyping the conservatives as old, white men.  There are plenty of others with that ideology too, who contributed plenty, and they're not all old, they're not all men and they're not all white.

I'm an old white man and was leader of the Humphrey for President group in my 4th-grade class in '68. My first girlfriend was black, my son's mother is half Turk. I voted for Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Clinton, Gore, Kerry and Obama, I protested the FIRST Gulf War in front of the UN every day before and after work for months, sometimes in dishearteningly tiny groups of 5 or less. I send dozens of letters to my Congressmen every year, championing progressive causes. In fact, I just wrote a letter to the Shrub today, with the wish that he feel the full weight of the shame he has brought upon our country for every minute of every hour of the rest of his days.

So I agree - enough of the 'old white men' meme!

that it hurts when stereotypes like "old, white men" are used.  I think of my dad, who would be an old, white man if he were still alive.  I think of my friend John, whom I have seen cringe, when the term is used in a derogatory way, and when it's associated with being a greedy, selfish, hateful, destructive  conservative.  Neither of them is anything like the stereotype being offered up, but somehow it still stings when that description is used, and it reminds them that some people will make unfair assumptions about them simply because of who they are and what they look like.  I thought we were against that type of treatment.  During the primary, the same types of statements were made about middle-aged white women, Appalachians, and other.  I really thought we were getting beyond stereotypes that we were working against this type of mindset.

    •  I don't know that it's stereotyping (0+ / 0-)

Did you watch any of their convention? It looked like a rally at a senior center - and very few faces of color were seen.

Are all old white men greedy? No. All they all Republican? No. But I'd say the majority of Republicans are greedy old white men.

That's not a huge group anymore, which leaves a lot of old white men free to be Democrats and Independents.

from the election, it's clear that there are plenty of people who voted for McCain who weren't white, male or old.  And that's after the Republican party had already lost many of their previous voters.  I'm sure that the exit polls from 2004 and 2000 show even more clearly that there are a whole lot of non-greedyoldwhitemen who contributed to this debacle.
