I've worked a fair amount in journalism too, and I can see both sides of this. I applaud droogie wholeheartedly for apologizing and recognizing his fuckup. But at the same time, it is still a fuckup and the damage to his credibility is still done. Droogie has my respect, and also my sympathy.

This sort of thing is hard to explain to non-journalists. A few years ago I cringed to see a good friend and former coworker put on suspension after some quotes in two of his investigative stories had been found to be fabricated. He knows he did wrong, and he has apologized, but the apology did not restore his career. He was a great investigator, did some great local pieces, and I still have lots of respect for him, but journalistic credibility is a funny thing - once you've lost it, it's very hard to get it back. My friend has since changed careers, but still does some feature pieces here and there on a freelance basis.

I understand very well what droogie says about sticking to the dick and fart jokes. I've done a fair amount of journalism myself - and in recent years, seeing the sad decline of newspapers, I've been lucky enough to make the transition into book publishing. But when I come to visit DailyKos, I'm just screwing around. I don't try to write anything of substance. I do look for links to real news, keep my eyes open for the more thoughtful, content-heavy pieces by people like bonddad and Jerome a Paris, and avoid the more emotionalistic, photo-heavy diaries that I don't care for. As a commenter I generally limit myself to annoying little complaints in other people's diaries. I have written only one diary of my own, and it wasn't a very good one.

When you make your living with words, you become aware with how using the wrong words can put you in peril. I would never publish a piece of serious writing without having it vetted by a good editor who can call me on my shit and save me from cutting my own neck. The complete absence of competent professional editing has always stuck me as being the number-one drawback of Internet blogs.

    Droogie, I wish you well.

I agree with you and wholeheartedly applaud you and your input to the conversation. My point was that the applause and respect didn't come out til now and the comment I was responding to addressed only the disapppointment.

But it's not a big deal to me because you've more than made up for the short comment expressing disappointment with this one which adds a lot to the conversation.

      Thanks again. It's appreciated.

I'm Ron Shepston and I'm not done yet. There's much left to accomplish.

and since droogie wasn't even writing under his real name, I sincerely hope this incident causes him nothing more than a bit of embarrassment, rather than any genuine professional harm. Sometimes it's hard to guess where the chips will fall in a case like this. But one can't be too careful.
