Please remember we have a private plane industry here in the US.  This industry is suffering like so many others.  The company I work for is in the process of laying off their workers.
Citi made a bad choice in their 50 mil jet business.  The biggest negativity is that it's a French business when they could spend a fraction of that cost for a jet built right here in the US.
If a manager had to visit 3-4 different plants in a day it isn't cost effective to fly coach with layovers.  Add the fact that there aren't large airports in many small underdeveloped parts of the US.  In their own plane they could visit all plants in one day, vs the week it would take to travel to the plants then back home again.
While we're outraged at the arrogance of these companies.  Remember, the US has an industry where workers are facing job losses like any other industry.

And as I pointed out in a comment below there is always the potential for France, in defense of its company, to encourage French firms to cancel $50 million in orders from American businesses.

      •  We'll cross that bridge if we come to it. (0+ / 0-)

But frankly, that's no defense for Citi spending taxpayer money.

        Fuck false equivalencies.

        •  I am not defending Citi (0+ / 0-)

I am expressing the concern where the government starts directly impacting trade when other governments may see that as a protectionist action (even if it wasn't the intent). This country needs to be able to maintain the exports it has or the situation gets worse.

Citi had to pay money down at different steps of the process.  From being part of the industry I can tell you that the odds of Dassault finding another buyer to pick up the order is slim.
All I want to point out is that the private plane industry is an industry just like all the others.  This negativity just puts a stigma on any corporations not asking for a bailout to buy or pick up planes that are already on order.

Okay, if you needed to supervise a manufacturing process, I could see going on-site to see how things work, but we're talking white collar here -- they can set up a nifty videoconferencing process for a hell of a lot less, with giant screens and everything.  Otherwise, consolidate travel, charter a plane, and get everything done in a few days.

      Hell, at least buy American!

in a day on a regular basis, the manager is the problem.  If he/she cannot put effective management in place in other states, and then trust them to run the business, that is a problem.  This type of drive-by management is more disruptive than it is effective, and usually more ego-driven than results driven.  How many of us us have lost a day, if not days of productivity while preparing for and then "hosting" the "big guys."

Citi already has 2 other older jets like this one worth 27MM each.  Fly those and prop up the small aviation industry or here is a better idea.  HIRE MORE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS!!!

But for sure, don't buy another French plane.  Stupid is as stupid does.
