  •  Amtrak (10+ / 0-)

I think they should be restricted to rail travel.

Who knows? It might just provide an impetus towards upgrading the Passenger Rail infrastructure in this country.

For international travel, well, there's always WebEx.

This Sarah Palin phenomenon is very curious. I think somebody watching us from Mars, they would think the country has gone insane. --Chomsky

    •  I don't know of anybody who travels who wouldn't (8+ / 0-)

As someone who used to be in almost constant trans-city commute, I absolutely would take Amtrak if the schedule allows for it.  Probably faster Boston -> NY with no security checkin, a beverage counter I can go to when I want, much better ability to sleep, etc.  It's actually viable and not brutal for overnight travel from the East coast to Chicago (if I fly overnight, you'd better wheel me away for at least 4 hours sleep before you put me in front of a customer or colleague who expects coherence).

I don't know of a commuter who would diagree with me.  Acela rocks!  If only I could have somehow taken it on that once-a-month trip I had to do to Europe...

(oh, the only time I ever had a private jet was ages ago--a rickety Cessna that belonged to a maniac I worked for for a short time that would take us into Needles, CA, from LAX for an energy lab he had there, because we needed to make the round trip multiple times a day sometimes.  Some perk, lemme tellya...)

Problem is that I occasionally have to fly to San Jose for the day, turn around, and be home by dinner. Not sure how to pull that off with Amtrak.

    •  I wish you could do that (0+ / 0-)

I used to question the need for high speed rail, now I can't imagine what I was thinking.  There are so many places that would benefit from high speed rail.
