    ... is that the U.S. was basing its torture on techniques used by the Soviets and Communist Chinese to extract FALSE confessions from prisoners -- you know, the kind of thing where a prisoner comes forward and says "I've seen the light, Capitalism is horrible and I am an enemy of the people and Communism is wonderful" etc. etc.

    These techniques -- waterboarding, exposure to hot and cold, exposure to light, sleep deprivations, etc. -- were NOT intended to extract legitimate intelligence from the subjects.

    Years ago the army gave classes to soldiers in how to resist this kind of torture. When the U.S. wanted to start applying "enhanced interrogation" techniques, it was the techniques described in these classes that they used as a model. Insane.
