Same crap. Some fruits and veggies, but a terrible selection and not very fresh. Kinda like a larger convenience store. (this was Ft Yates on Standing Rock). And then we wonder why American Indians have such high rates of diabetes and obesity.

for emergencies- canned and dried.  Also, they are more likely to have a fresh garden or home canned food.  That tradition is lost as rural families need two jobs to survive and must drive farther to get to work.  Rural stores can't easily get affordable fresh produce and if it doesn't sell they have to throw it out= and then they are out of business for sure.  Check those expiration dates in a small rural store.

And honestly, rural folks here have a long history of bad diets- salt pork, biscuits, corn bread, soup beans and sugar and salt, Vienna sausage and spam.

What kept obesity down was starvation.  And there are epigenetic relationships where there are changes to methylation patterns of DNA which may influence risk for some illnesses like diabetes in your grandchildren.  If your grandparents were starving, you might have more risk for obesity or diabetes.
