  •  Iowa?! (0+ / 0-)

You have to wonder how that happened... pretty much every other state make sense from their political climate.

    •  I'd say a couple of reasons. (2+ / 0-)

Iowa is culturally more a part of the Great Plains than the Industrial Midwest.  And while Missouri is partly Great Plains and partly South, it also has two major metropolitan areas to counterbalance the rural population -- Iowa doesn't.

In fact, the more I look at that map, the more it looks like the right-to-work states fall into three distinct yet over-lapping regions, each of which probably has its own historical and cultural reasons for not having a strong union background -- the South (Old Confederacy), the Great Plains, and the Mormon West (a phrase I saw in another diary recently to describe Idaho, Utah, and Nevada - I think Arizona can be reasonably added to that). To me, the one that really stands out as an anomaly is Wyoming -- somehow it seems to have avoided the mining-based unionization evident in the other Rocky Mountain states.
