  •  We've been sending care packages (12+ / 0-)

to the guys in Afganistan, and know the list of things the GIs want. Our son entered Special Forces a year ago to be a combat medic 18D - asian area (he already speaks Chinese) so we figure that before long he'll be in Afganistan ...

What different things might we include in packages to Iraq or Afganistan specifically destined for the nationals, their wives and children? Things that would be useful, and not culturally offensive, that you and your guys could pass along to your 'terps for their families?

    •  I have ideas of what to send to Afghanistan (0+ / 0-)

Kids there need warm clothes (jackets/coats, hats and boots), notebooks, and pens. I am serious, pens are something kids beg for there. Socks for the locals and troops. Simple toys are always nice; stuffed animals, coloring books, crayons, baby blankets are likely a good idea.

Do not send clothing such as sleeveless shirts/bloses or shorts or bathing suits.

But what people there really need is cash. These items of charity are needed, but will not solve the problems there. It is best to buy goods there to provide for the most needy if possible, to encourage their economy and create jobs that will be part of a long term solution.
