Khatami running if McCain had been elected. The people in Iran are not at all happy with having their well-being imperiled by Ahamadinejad's posturing and bellicosity, never mind the increasingly repressive social climate created by him, especially for women.

Iran is not Ahamadinejad and more than the US was Bush. There was great relief in Iran when Obama was elected (I have friends there). People feel there's a possibility for ratcheting down the hostilities with Obama in office, and Khatami is just the person who can open that door.

      But is it Khamenei?

The Ayatollahs still wield ultimate power over the President from what I understand.

      Is that your friends' opinion?

have been pretty tepid, but still a whole lot more kind than what's happening now.

The clerics have ultimate control but they aren't a monolithic bloc. His father was a cleric so there are many religious leaders who see him as one of their own. Interestingly, there are many among the hard right who don't like him at all because of his inflationary policies, the sanctions caused by his bellicosity, and his belief that the reappearance of the Twelfth Imam is imminent. (Sounds like The Rapture, no?)
