      have been pretty tepid, but still a whole lot more kind than what's happening now.

      The clerics have ultimate control but they aren't a monolithic bloc. His father was a cleric so there are many religious leaders who see him as one of their own. Interestingly, there are many among the hard right who don't like him at all because of his inflationary policies, the sanctions caused by his bellicosity, and his belief that the reappearance of the Twelfth Imam is imminent. (Sounds like The Rapture, no?)
