    dean is pretty well rooted in the periphery, politically, and he's at his most effective when speaking on behalf of the periphery. in 2004, he helped to break open the center's hold on the party. in 2005-8 he aided peripheral elements within the party in decentralizing many aspects of the DNC, especially WRT funding but also in messaging. that led to the sort of environment that obama could beat the center's star candidate in a very contested primary.

    however, now that obama's ensconced in the center, he has absolutely no interest in furthering the decentralization that opened that door up. not because of ideology, not because of a personal grudge, but because the interests of the center and the periphery are by nature at odds.
