I'm so sorry to hear about your son.  I understand the difficulty in keeping a level head!

It is hard to confront how limited our power as parents can be to protect our children.  Sometimes circumstances may narrow down choices until all you can really do is hold a spot open in your heart and/or home for the wheel of time to turn -- although I hope that you are still in a position to do a bit more.

What is happening?  Is he in a lockup of some kind, or is something else going on?

I have two kids, 4 and 8.  These are the easy years, I imagine, and I hope and pray for good fortune and strong communities in ten years time.

And only some of it is mine to tell. So far, he has managed to avoid incarceration.

I think the hardest part for me to accept is how f-ing vital my helping him learn how to fight was. As a New Yorker, I felt this was like an ancillary or auxilliary skill to have for those rare times (and my HS had a great karate program). They have not been rare times for my boy. He wins, almost always, but the process of being confronted and not being able to avoid violence is disgusting and demoralizing for him (thank God!). And regular.
