  •   Ancient Muslim city to be razed by China (8+ / 0-)

Kashgar, ancient Silk Road oasis, to be "improved" by Beijing.

But three of the Old City’s seven sectors are judged unfit for Uighur architecture and will be rebuilt with decidedly generic apartment buildings. Two thousand other homes will be razed to build public plazas and schools. Poor residents, who live in the smallest homes, already are being permanently moved to boxy, concrete public housing on Kashgar’s outskirts.

I've witnessed this displacement of the Uyghurs firsthand in Xinjiang, the westernmost province in China. I was detained for hours by the police in Urumqi for merely taking photos of people who were trying to share their story about exactly this type of gentrification. This has been going on for years; the earthquake alibi is a sham and everyone knows it.

Please visit diary here with details and more pix.

Dick Cheney rhymes with "sick meanie." Pass it on.

the Trocharians (who arguably, may have been of Celtic origin).  All that is left of that group is ancient temples with paintings and mummies.  It is just the normal, ugly process of civilization in my opinion.....

...are built on the ruins of other cities.

Especially in places that have such long histories of civilization.

      •  The Tocharians weren't Celts... (0+ / 0-)

...that's an old, long-ago-debunked internet myth. The Tocharian language (which died out in the middle ages) was indeed Indo-European, but it was more closely related to eastern Indo-European language families, including Greek. They do appear to have been light-eyed with red, blond, or brunette hair and the genetic evidnece does points towards a European connection...there clearly was intermarriage with Asian populations over the milennia, though. The Uighers do seem to be the descendants of the Tocharians, albeit with a heavy Turkic admixture.

that's what they do in India - raze the slums close to the jobs and build housing out in the suburbs, where there are no jobs. And they wonder why this does not work.
